What makes a space a place?
When the space is affected and/or changed by people
What makes up a place?
People, businesses, buildings, homes etc
What are the six characteristics of a place?
Physical geography, Demography, Socio-economic, Cultural, Political, Built environment
How can a place have different meanings to different people?
As some people may live there, or work there, or they may be retired, or studying, or on holiday etc
What is perception of place?
How a person/people view a place
What is the difference between location, space and place?
Location - relative or absolute definitive location. Space - a indefinite area. Place - an area with meaning.
How can age affect perception of place?
Younger people are more inclined to cities, whereas families and older people favour rural areas e.g. Brighton has a young population
How can gender affect perception of place?
How safe an area is can differ by gender, and gender roles mean some places are perceived as ‘male’ or ‘female’ such as homes being considered ‘female’ and factories being considered ‘male’ in the 20th century
How can sexuality affect perception of place?
Some places are safer or seen as friendlier for LGBTQ people e.g. Brighton and San Francisco
How can religion affect perception of place?
Places are given importance in religions through places of worship, e.g. Jerusalem or Mecca
How can role affect perception of place?
Everyone is different and this changes perception e.g. age, job, contacts etc
Quality of Life
The extent to that people’s needs and desires are met
Standard of Living
The ability to access services and goods
Deprivation
A lack of resources and opportunity, with low QoL and SoL
