What is causality?
Cause and effect, how one thing affects another
What are systems?
Groups of related objects and the relationships and effects between them
What is equilibrium?
A state of stability in a system, balance between inputs and outputs
What is feedback?
Automatic internal responses to change in a system, negative feedback restores a system to equilibrium and positive feedback amplifies change
What is inequality?
Unequal opportunity or resource distribution between places or people
What is representation?
Anything that gives meaning or perception to the world or something in it
What is identity?
How something is recognised, associated with the perception of people and place
What is globalisation?
The increasing interconnectedness of the world and places
What is interdependence?
Mutual dependence between two or more places or things
Mitigation
Action against the impact of natural hazards
What is adaptation?
Response to change in order to recover or improve a system
What is sustainability?
Use of resources that are viable and repeatable in the long term
What is risk?
Probability of a negative outcome to a event
What is resilience?
The ability to resist and recover from negative event outcomes
What is a threshold?
A ‘tipping point’ after which changes are irreversible
