Outline a brief history of Toxteth.

A

Established by Saxons and was a closed off area until 16th century. Liverpool started to become a major port and more industrialised. River became linked with docks and Toxteth was given ambitious housing scheme. Was an attractive site for the growing middle class. Areas built behind villas used for poorly constructed housing. Epidemics spread and the middle class moved out.

Established by the Saxons. Mainland links with the seas with the growth of the shipbuilding industry in the 19th century. Tourism began in the 1840s and wealthy families started to move there. Railway arrived there in 1861 and the shellfish industry grew. Became a dormitory settlement for Exeter in the 20th century.
