Changing Places - relationships, connections, meaning and representation Flashcards
what is placemaking
a collaborative process by which people collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share
what is reimaging
the cultural reinvention of a place, more than creating new visual images of places. it concerns the range of ways that places are culturally constructed or reconstructed through are photography, film, writing, performance, sound and other forms of representation. this is not just about rebranding but can be about contesting other images of place including those of policymakers and regeneration organisations or tourists agencies to demonstrate alternative meaning of places
what is remaking
brings together physical, economic, social and cultural changes that a place might experience, includes attempts to regenerate or redevelop a place, as well as the ways in which images of places are changed, incorporates changes to place that are not necessarily explicit led by political policies or investment activities but that might be the consequences of wider economic and social changes - might include the arrival of new migrant population or processes such as gentrification, it incorporates changes to places that happen more by change as well as those which are the result of deliberate action
what is regeneration and redevelopment
formal state and private sector attempts to change the fabric of a place, often led by local or national policy, involves either attracting new economic activity and investment to an area or trying to stimulate local enterprise (or both). also includes elements of social transformations, such as the provision of new educational facilities or recreational spaces. typically involves a significant element of physical change to places, for example:
re-purposing land used for former economic activity for new initiatives, through demolition, decontamination and reclamation
the development of new housing
the construction of new retail and leisure facilities, and other landscaping and infrastructure enhancements.
what is rebranding
reinventing places for economic reasons, a deliberate effort to market a place as desirable for investment and wealth creation. tends to be part of urban policy within the UK. It goes hand in hand with place-making. Cities want to encourage footloose global capital to invest in their locality in order to revitalise, usually undertaken by a partnership of local government, regional/urban policy agencies (e.g. Local Enterprise Partnerships), and private marketing and brand consultants whose core aim is to sell a place.
what does rebranding or reimaing of a place do to it
gives new place-meaning to a location
undertaken in order to boost footfall or the employment prospects of an area
people behind the catchy slogan, hashtag or map of a heritage landscape have a particular task- to change perception and subsequently behaviour.
what are third places
anchors of community life that facilitate and foster greater interaction and as a result comfort and a sense of belonging e.g. pubs, cafes, shops
why are third places good
properties owned by businesses - less derelict buildings, bring people/money, job opportunities - positive multiplier effect
creates a sense of community - use of area, create a more desirable place - people want to come

it is a sociable place: one where people meet each other and take people when they come to visit
what is gentrification
the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing and attracting new businesses often displacing current inhabitants in the process e.g. balfron towers
