Define location, locale, sense of place
Location - its literal place on a map
Locale - the activities that take place there
Sense of place - how people feel about that place based on their experiences
Experienced place vs Media place
Experienced place:
- when you have visited a place
- Likely to have deeper attachment
- topophilia = human love of a place
- Genius Loci = spirit of a place
- Topophobia = a hate for a place
Media place:
- places portrayed in films, novels and pictures
- attachment to place is not as deep
e.g Maldives
Near vs Far places
Near place - A place that is geographically close or person feels sense of belonging to place
Far place - Geographically far or person feels detached to a place

What are endogenous factors?
Factors that originate internally that cause a place to change:
Land use
Location
Infrastructure
demographic characteristics
economic characteristics
physical geography
built environment
What are exogenous factors?
Factors that originate externally that cause a place to change:
Flows of people
Flows of money
Flows of resources
Flows of ideas
Define regeneration
when a place is redeveloped and changed to encourage improvement
Define gentrification
When an area’s status is upgraded to improve an areas wealth
Insider vs Outsider
Insider = someone who feels secure and at ease in a place
- understands a place/ is a regular
Outsider = someone who feels excluded
- Tourist
- Immigrant
- Homeless person
Explain placelessness
Some places lose their sense of place and uniqueness
They become clone towns
They happen because:
Globalisation - the interconnection between countries including trade
TNCs - more large chain companies opening in towns and villages
