Cause of 2002 eruption
Fueled by residual magma in lava lake
Magma rising from fissure vents
Fissure opened on southern side of volcano - earthquake
Lava lake was drain through fissure
Primary effects of 2002 eruption
S+E - 12,500 homes destroyed
S - many moved to refugee camps
S - 147 people died
S+P - road blocked by lava
E - lost their business and jobs
Secondary effects of 2002 eruption
S - Aid couldnt reach Goma because lava blocked roads
S - Cholera spread due to overcrowding
E - most people coudnt afford to rebuild house
S+E+En - Acid rain, Farmland damaged
S+En - High levels of CO2
S - water and power supplies destroyed
S - homelessness

Aid gave bedding, water, food and clothes
UN supplied 260 tonnes of food
