Holderness Coast Flashcards
What is the holderness coastline
Located on east coast of England
Fastest eroding coastline in europe
How fast is holderness eroding?
1.8 metres a year
Why is holderness eroding quickly?
Rock type - cliffs made from soft rock boulder clay which slumps when wet
Narrow beaches - less protection to the coast so wave power is not reduced
Man-made structure - groynes further up the coast means more exposed beaches further down the coast
Powerful waves - waves at holderness have a long fetch so energy of waves increased
What are the management strategies at holderness?
Bridlington has 4.7km sea wall
Hornsea is protected by sea wall, groynes, rock armour
Withernsea tried to make beach wider by using groynes and also uses a sea wall
Mappleton uses rock groynes
Spurn head is protected with groynes and rock armour
What are the conflicts along the holderness coast
Increased erosion at Great Cowden because of groynes at mappleton. This lead to farms being destroyed
Some people disagree with where sea defences are located especially if their land isnt protected
Some sea defenses negatively impact tourism
