How do the decisions of transnational corporations affect the demographic, economic and social characteristics of places? (Detroit USA)
The decisions of TNCs have major impacts on the demographic, economic and social characteristics of the place. Detroit in the USA was a major global centre of car manufacturing in the early 20th century. The investment from TNCs gave the city a massive economic boost- large numbers of jobs were created, with fairly high wages.
This also altered demographic characteristics as it resulted in more migrants attracted, therefore the population grew.
After the 1950s many of the manufacturing TNCs closed down, relocating to places like Mexico. This, therefore, resulted in a population decline, reductions in employment and social deprivation.
How does the impact of international or global institutions affect the demographic, cultural, economic and social characteristics of a place?
> The world food programme (WFP) is an international organisation that provides food assistance, often as emergency aid, wherever it is needed.
It affects social and demographic characteristics ensuring that people have enough food and preventing deaths from starvation.

How do the connections between places in the past shape their character in the present? (London and New York)
For centuries, London and New York have been connected to each other and other major cities by sea trade routes. These connections helped them to become more wealthy, attract more people, and be closely linked to other cultures.
What are new connections?
New connections are made between places in the present which can affect their character, e.g. London and New York have made new connections which strengthen their character as world cities- they are now more closely connected through industries such as finance and banking because of the internet.
