What is Bourneville an example of?
Bourneville village is an example of a place shaped almost entirely by the beliefs and ideals of one industrial family, the Cadburys.
Creation of Bourneville
Built as a garden village in late 1800s after the family moved to the area in order to build new
premises for their expanding cocoa and chocolate business
How was the use of large space beneficial to workers
Ample space to provide spacious and sanitary living conditions for their employees; they also set up
schools, hospitals, museums, public baths and reading rooms for them
What happened in 2003
Voted nicest place to live in the UK by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation
What “movement” was created
The garden city movement aimed to provide a better quality of life for workers by having:
- increased recreational space
- low-density housing
- community services
How is it run today?
Ran by the Bournville village trust (BVT).
Contains 7,800 houses on 1000 acres of land with 100 acres of recreational space.
Cadbury is still one of Birmingham’s top employers and continues to make chocolate.
