Changing Health Behaviours Flashcards
what is the basic process used to design an intervention?
many interventions are designed according to the ISLAGIATT
principle
It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time
What is meant by behaviour selection?
What are the 2 different stages?
what is your goal?
identify key specific behaviours:
who needs to do:
- what differently
- when
- where
- for how long?
- the target may be to stop or start a behaviour, increase or decrease its frequency, duration and/or intensity or change its form
What are the stages in this behavioural map?
- individual
- target behaviour
- influencing behaviour
What is needed in order to acheive the outcomes that are wanted?
in order to acheive the outcomes you want, be clear about whose behavious you want to change
is it a child, parent, health professional or all three?
are there subgroups?
What needs to be considered when you are choosing which behaviours to target?
- likely impact if undertaken
- likelihood that such a behaviour will be implemented
- how easy it is to do
- does it cost a lot of money? time?
- will people like doing it?
- spill over to behaviours and people
- every behaviour is within a network of behaviours within each person - and every person is within a network of other people
What is meant by the COM-B model?
behaviour occurs as an interaction between three necessary conditions
- capability
- motivation
- opportunity
What is meant by capability as part of the COM-B model?
people’s psychological and physical abilities
e.g. knowledge, physical and mental skills, mobility and strength
What is meant by motivation as part of the COM-B model?
influences that energise and direct behaviour:
intentions and evaluations
(collectively known as “reflective motivation”)
and desires, emotions and habits
(collectively known as “automatic motivation”)
What is meant by opportunity as part of the COM-B model?
the environment with which people interact
whether it be the physical environment of objects, events and time
or the social environment of culture and norms
