Chaney Flashcards
Outline what is meant by positive reinforcement (operant conditioning)
Giving someone something pleasant to encourage a behaviour
Outline what. Is meant by negative reinforcement
Taking away something bad to encourage a behaviour
Outline the background to the study by Chaney et al
-In Australia 1 in 4 children have asthma, it is the second highest cause of paediatric hospital admissions as well as a major cause of school absenteeism. Compliance with asthma medication is low at between 30-70%
-Children often found these devices difficult to use and not fun
Outline the aim of the study by Chaney
-Chaney wanted too see whether th use of positive reinforcement could be incorporated to a spacer device to help train children to use their asthma pump correctly
-The new funhaler included negative reinforcement (taking away symptoms of asthma for doing behaviour) as well as positive reinforcement (a whistle like sound for correctly using the funhaler)
Outline the sample used by Chaney
32 children from Australia (22 boys 10 girls)
-aged 18 months - 6 years
-Recruted from GP clinics within 51 km of Perth
-The clinicsspanned across different socioeconomic areas
Outline the procedure used by Chaney et al
1) parents were not acted by phone before being visited at home. Written informed consent, was obtained before they filled in the questionnaire about their child’s current inhaler spacer device
2)Parents were then given a funhaler for their child to use over the next 2 weeks
3)after 2 weeks, parents were contacted again and given another questionnaire to ill in (the time asking them about the funhaler device.
Outline the findings/conclusions found by Chaney et al
Asthma inhaler- 50% achieved 4 or more breath cycles per delivery
Funhaler- 80% achieved 4 or mor breath cycles
Attitudes
Inhaler- 10% of parents were happy with device
Funhaler 61% of parents were happy with this new device
Which side of the nature nurture debate is Chaney on
Nurture
-They way you are brought up/ the devices used (funhaler) nay change the behaviours carried out
Outline which side of the free will determinism Chaney is on
Determinist
-Child does behaviour due to the device used which is given to them. By a GP
Freewill
-parents choose for the children to use a funhaler
Explain how CHney related to the behaviourist perspective
-Born as blank slates, have t learn everything
-learn to use inhaler properly through the se of a funhaler
-Not pre known how to use the inhaler
Outline how Chaney supports the key theme of external influences on children’s behaviour
-The funhaler (external nfluence on behaviour) is needed to encourage a good behaviour
Uses positive and negative reinforcement
How does the study by Chaney link to the developmental area
The developmental are aims defined as how life experiences in your childhood affect later life
The use of the funhaler may allow for n adult life these people to be able to use an inhaler
