After the death of proper Muhammad there was a disagreement of who should be the next leader. There were two opposing sides. Some Muslims believed that the leader should be a direct family member of Muhammad. However majority of Muslims were happy for the leader to not be a family member. The first leader was Abu bakr , who was a close friend of Muhammad. He was given the tile ‘caliph’ which mean successor in Arabic . Some Muslims still believed that the leader should be a family member , so Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali was the 4th leader after Abu bakr.

They believed that the leader of islam needs only to be well educated in the teaching of the Qur’an. Sunni Muslims were happy with Abu bakr as their leader.
