What are the learning outcomes?
Identify factors that contribute to challenging situations, explore strategies for challenging situations and practice calming techniques
What does de-escalation involve?
Understanding common signs of escalating behaviours and ability to use communication skills to purposefully engage anxious, emotionally aroused or agitated individuals.
What are some factors that influence de-escalation?
Emotions, physical stimulation, relational aspects, thoughts and beliefs, and culture.
What are some physiological signs of situations which require de-escalation.
Flushed/red face, gritted teeth, grimacing, clenched fists, pacing, prolonged eye contact or staring, increased respiration’s, puffing and blowing.
Why do nurses need to use de-escalation.
We are helping people that are very vulnerable and out of their usual environment. Aka lots of emotions going on.
Preparation strategies for de-escalation?
Self-awareness (control your own response), self inventory (what makes you angry or anxious), physiological preparation (Slow your breathing and drop your shoulders)
What are some de-escalation strategies?
Encourage face to face communication, do not interrupt,
What are some de-escalation strategies?
Encourage face to face communication, do not interrupt, ask questions and paraphrase, move slowly, respond to physical signs of relaxation.
What are the 3 things you need to make sure you do when attempting de-escalation.
Attitude (respectful), verbal communication (calm, clear, slow), Non-verbal communication (non-threatening, relaxed, eye contact)

What are effective strategies of negotiation?
Active listening, validation, empathy, offer choices and hope, set clear limits.
