Mental wellbeing
A
- Is the state of mind, enjoyment of life, and ability to cope with the normal stresses of everyday life and develop to their potential.
- Considered in terms of variability along a continuum → fluctuates overtime due to the interactive influence of internal and external factors (i.e. dynamic).

Mentally healthy people
A
- Have high levels of functioning; can maintain this when encountering a challenge
- Display resilience
- Have high social and emotional wellbeing

Levels of functioning
A
- Refers to how well an individual independently performs or operates in their environment.
- Relates to:
- Activities of daily living; for example, self-care and personal hygiene
- Work productivity
- Participation in school
- Interpersonal relationships; for example, developing and maintaining friendships

Resilience
A
- Refers to the ability to successfully cope with adversity, and to ‘bounce back’ and restore positive functioning.
- Relates to:
* Belief in own abilities to accomplish tasks and succeed (i.e. high self-efficacy)
* Self-esteem
* Approaching adversity with a sense of optimism, opportunity and hope
* Being adaptable and flexible
* Being organised
* Having problem-solving skills
* Making realistic plans and carrying them out.

The Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) conceptual model
A
- Is a holistic, multi-dimensional framework that describes and explains physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cultural wellbeing in relation to ATSI peoples.
- A focus on the individual, their family and the entire community to which they belong → reflects ATSI collectivist culture
- Role in clinical practice → builds rapport, reduces misdiagnosis and culturally informs individuals (e.g gives them a better understanding of root causes, rather than just symptoms).
