Ch.8 Flashcards
Experimental design
A study design in which the independent variable is controlled ,manipulated or introduced in some way by the researcher
Placebo
A stimulated treatment of the control group that is designed to appear authentic
Internal validity
Agreement between a study’s conclusions about casual connections and what is actually true
Pretest-post test control group experiment
An experiment design with two or more randomly selected groups (an experimental and a control group) in which the researcher controls or introduces the independent variable and measures the dependent variable at least two times (pretest and post test measurement)
Pre test and post test advantages
Selecting samples randomly from a larger population increases the chances that the samples represent the population
-is useful for separating the effects of the independent variable from those of maturation the biological and physiological process that causes people to change over time
Random assignment
Process of randomly selecting experimental and control groups from all study participants.
Selection bias
A bias in the way the experimental and control or comparison groups are selected that is responsible for preexisting differences between the groups
Maturation
The biological and psychological processes that causes people to change over time
Post test only control group experiment
An experimental design with no protest
Solomon four group design
A controlled experiment with an additional experiment and control forum , with each receiving a posttest only
Quasi -experimental design
An experimental design that is missing one or more aspects or a true experiment , most frequently random assignment into experimental and control groups
Quasi disadvantage
Researcher does not have full control over all aspects of the experiment. The missing elements could be control over timing ,the selection of subjects or the ability to randomize.
Field experiments
An experiment done in the real world of class rooms offices factories homes playgrounds and the like
Experiments in the laboratory
Laboratory research
Research done in settings that allow the researchers control over the conditions such as in s university or medical setting
Experimenter expectations
When expected behaviors or outcomes are communicated to subjects by the researcher
