Ch.6 - Blood Flashcards
Platelets
Component of blood necessary to blood clotting
Plasma
Liquid portion of blood
- contains nutrients, wastes, salts, and proteins
Red blood cell (rbc)
Formed element that contains hemoglobin and carries oxygen from
The lungs to the tissues; also called erythrocytes.
Lymphocytes
Specialized white blood cell that functions in specific defense; t-cells and b-cells
Hemoglobin
Iron-containing pigment in red blood cells that combines with and transports oxygen
Anemia
Inefficiency in the oxygen carrying ability of blood due to a shortage of hemoglobin
ABO blood type
Blood type is based on the presence or absence of two possible antigens, called type a and antigen type b
Rh blood type
Rh- individual do not have antibodies to the Rh factor
Hemolytic disease of the newborn
Due to a pregnancy in which the child is Rh+, an Rh- mother can begin to produce antibodies against Rh+ red bliss cells. Antibodies can cross the placenta and cause hemolysis of an Rh+ child’s red blood cell
Prothrombin
Plasma protein converted to thrombin during the steps of blood clotting
Thrombin
Enzyme that converts fibrinogen to fibrin threads during blood clotting
Fibrinogen
Plasma protein that is converted into fibrin threads during blood clotting
Fibrin
Insoluble protein threads during blood clotting
