Ch.3 Cell Theory Flashcards
What are the 3 main parts of cell theory?
- Every living thing is made up of cells
- Cells are the main structures and functions in an organism
- All cells come from other pre-existing cells
Differentiate between Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes.
Pro - no nucleus
single-celled
contains a cell wall, plasmids..
consists mainly of bacteria/fungi
Eu - true nucleus
multi-cellular
most have no cell wall, chromosomes
consists mainly of plants, animals, protists
What is the function of the cytoskeleton in a cell?
- has microscopic fibers that hold the structures of a cell in place.
True or false?
(Just read & remember)
The cell membrane is made of a double layer of phospholipids? True
The Golgi apparatus is also known as the ER? False
Prokaryotic cells are larger and more complex than eukaryotic cells? False
Chloroplasts are organelles that enable plants to convert solar energy into chemical energy? True
What is the cell membrane made of, and why is it important that it is made of that particular substance?
Phospholipid Bilayer, it is important because it is selectively permeable, allowing only certain substances to enter the cell.
What is the lysosome’s role in a caterpillar becoming a butterfly?
During metamorphosis, lysosomes with digestive enzymes break apart the caterpillar’s skin into becoming a butterfly.
What is made of RNA, and it makes proteins?
Ribosome
What contains digestive enzymes that defend the cell from invaders or break down damaged cell parts?
Lysosome
What produces and transports lipids?
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
What provides protection, shape, and support to plant cells?
Cell Wall
What supplies energy to the cell by converting food into ATP?
Mitochondrion
What stores most of the genetic information of the cell?
Nucleus
What modifies and packages proteins into vesicles for transport through the cell?
Golgi Apparatus
What is a small membrane-bound package to transport substances in and out of a cell?
Vesicle
