CH.1 What Is Biology? Flashcards
What is the study of life and living things?
Biology
What are the steps of the scientific methods?
- Observation and Ask a question
- Hypothesis
- Experiment
- Analysis and Conclusion
- Communicate and Make a report
What are the 7 themes that all living things share?
Cell Structure, Reproduction, Metabolism, Heredity, Homeostasis, Evolution, and Interdependence
What is the purpose of peer review in science?
So, that fellow scientists can analyze and compare the results of their experiments, to be able to confirm accurate information.
What is a hypothesis, and how is it different from a theory?
An hypothesis is testable statement that can be tested, while a theory is supported by a large group of support and as been tested several times.
What are the factors you change in the experiment in order to see a change in the results?
Independent Variable
What changes in the experiment as a result of the changes in the independent variable?
Dependent Variable
What are the two main types of data that scientists collect and analyze?
Qualitative data & Quantitative data
A farmer wants to compare the growth of two varieties of corn: hybrid and non-hybrid. He plants 100 seeds of each variety in separate plots of land that have the same soil, sunlight, and water conditions. He measures the height of each plant after 60 days. What are the independent and dependent variables in this experiment?
Independent V - the separate plots of land
Dependent V - the height of each plant
