Ch28 Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are lymph nodes?
Swellings on the ends of lymph vessels, contain WBCs. Located in armpits, neck, chest, etc.
State 3 functions of the lymphatic system.
- To transport disgested fats from the villi,
- To store lymphocytes in lymph nodes.
- To produce antibodies and transport them to site of infection.
How does lymph differ from blood?
•It is a yellow colour where blood is red.
•It contains lymphocytes and no RBCs.
•Does not pump through the heart - transported in lymphatic system, separate to the circulatory system.
How is lymph returned to blood?
Reenters at left and right subclavian veins, located at the clavicle.
How does lymph move?
Through the contracting of body muscles, which squeezes the lmyph along. Vessels have valves to prevent backflow when muscles relax.
Why can lymph nodes become swollen?
Due to infection, as more WBCs come to fight infection and produce antibodies.
What is the function of the spleen?
Produce antibodies, filters blood and removed old RBCs
