Ch23 Protista Flashcards
Are amoeba prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic
Draw a diagram of an amoeba
OR name the structures you’d find in an amoeba.
Pseudopodia, ectoplasm/endoplasm, fat droplets, food vacuole, contractile vacuole, nucleus, waste product
What is the function of the food vacuole?
Secrete digestive enzymes
What is the function of the contractile vacuole?
Water regulation / osmoregulation
(without it, amoeba would burst)
Describe how the contractile vacuole functions.
- Amoeba has higher salt concentration than surrounding water.
- Water enters via osmosis in contractile vacuole.
- Contractile vacuole swells and moves to edge of cell.
- It then bursts and expels water.
(5. Contractile vacuole manages osmoregulation - without it, amoeba would burst.)
What do the psuedopodia do?
Allow for movement (they are produced at any point on the cell in the direction it wants to go)
Used to engulf prey
What is the typical habitat for amoeba?
Freshwater / ponds
