Ch2 Perception Flashcards
Figure ground perception
When you can perceive two different things depending on what you consider the background and what you consider the figure
Closure
The tendency to perceive the complete herbal figure even when there are gaps in what your senses tell you
Proximity
Nearness whether you consider changing groups or individual
Similarity
When people think of similar objects as belonging together
Continuity
When people see smooth continuous patterns and not disrupted ones
Law of common fate
When you see things moving together and assume that they belong together
Stroboscope motion
The illusion of movement produced by showing the rapid progressions of images or objects that are not moving at all
Monocular cues
Need only one eye to be perceived for example depth
What are the monocular cues
Depth perspective clearness overlapping shadow and texture gradient
Perspective
The tendency to see parallel lines as coming closer together or converging as they move away from us
Clearness
Nearby objects appear clear faraway objects seem less clear
Overlapping
Perceiving one object as being in front of another
Shadows and highlights
Give information about objects three-dimensional shapes and where they are placed in relation to the source of light
Texture gradient
Surface quality and appearance of an object
Parallax
Tendency of objects to seem to move forward or backward depending on how far away they are from the viewer
Binocular cues for depth
Both eyes are required
Retinal disparity
Demonstrating in the experiment when using two fingers holding up moving each image will be slightly different because the finger will be seen at different angles
Convergence
When we try to focus on something coming closer to us our eyes converge look cross eyed
Perceptual constancies
Size color brightness shape
Size constancy
The tendency to perceive an object is being of one size no matter how far away the object is even though the size of its image on the retina varies with its distance
Color constancy
Tendency to perceive objects as being their color even though different light might change the appearance of their Color
Brightness constancy
Tendency to perceive an object is being equally bright even when the intensity of the light around it changes
Shape constancy
Knowledge that an item has only one shape no matter what angle you view the item from
