Ch2: Hematopoiesis Flashcards
1
Q
definition of hematopoiesis
A
process by which multipotent progenitors (hematopoietic stem cells - HSCs) give rise to all hematolymphoid lineages
2
Q
When and where does hematopoiesis occur in development?
A
early in fetal development: in yolk sac
later in fetal development: shifts to the fetal liver
birth-throughout life: bone marrow
3
Q
Where are HSCs usually found in bone marrow?
A
- usually in protective niche, where they’re quiescent
- but can be stimulated to divide or leave the marrow, enter circulation (under conditions of hematopoietic stress)
4
Q
How is differentiation of HSCs regulated?
A
intrinsic factors:
-lineage specific transcription factors
extrinsic factors:
-lineage-specific growth factors
