Ch1: Intro to blood and hematopoietic tissues Flashcards
1
Q
What is makes up blood?
A
Plasma: protein-ruch fluid
Formed elements: red cells, white cells, platelets
2
Q
Function of red cells
A
vehicles of gas exchange:
- deliver O2 from lungs –> tissues
- deliver CO2 from tissues –> lungs
3
Q
Types of white cells
A
cells of innate immune system: -neutrophils -eosinophils -basophils effectors of the adaptive immune system: -lymphocytes
4
Q
Function of platelets
A
w/ circulating coagulation factors found in the plasma:
-mediate hemostasis (the normal clotting of blood in response to injury)
5
Q
Pancytopenia
A
everything low:
- low red cell
- low white cell
- low platelet counts
6
Q
Leukocytosis
A
high white cell count
7
Q
3 common indications that something’s up with bone marrow
A
1) pancytopenia (b/c all lines effected)
2) Leukocytosis
3) presence of early marrow progenitors in the peripheral blood
