Ch.14-Interactions among organisms: Parasitism Flashcards
Parasite
an organism that lives in or on a host organism and feeds on its tissues or body fluids
- > often a symbiosis
- > Estimated that 50% of species on earth are parasites
Symbiosis
a relationship in which two species live in close physiological contact with each other
-> not mutualism
Pathogen
a parasite that causes disease
Predation/herbivory
- usually short-term
- eat many individuals
- kills quickly
- lower reproductive rate then prey
Parasitism
- usually long-term
- eat one/ few individuals
- usually kills more slowly
- higher reproductive rate than host
Can recover from parasitism but not from predation

Birth->Susceptible->Infected->Recovered
Macroparasite
Large enough to see with the naked eye
-Ex: worms, trematodes, etc.
Microparasites
too small to see with the naked eye
-Ex: bacteria, protozoans,etc.
Many types of parasites
-Malaria, tapeworms, athletes foot, potato blight, HIV, Botfly, Giardia, Flu Virus, Round worm, Rabies virus, Head lice, Foot and mouth disease
Vector
any agent that carries and transmits a pathogen
-Parasites can require vectors
Host defenses from parasites
- change behavior(avoid sick individuals, move to parasite-free location, etc.)
- immune system
- biochemical defense
Parasite adaptations
- encapsulation(prevents detection)
- change host behavior, physiology, survival, or reproduction for their benefit
Cost of Parasites
Diseases of crops and livestock: -plant pathogens cost~33 billion/year -foot and mouth disease cost 3.4 billion/year Human parasites -flu cost 300 million/year
