Self-esteem
-self-esteem for girls declines during adolescence
-self-esteem correlates with perceptions that many not match reality (ex. I think I’m super ugly while I am actually conventionally attractive)
-high self-esteem = accurate, justified perceptions
Narcissism
self-centered & self-concerned approach in society (some personalities are narcissistic)
Erikson: Identity vs. identity confusion (5th)
- Psychosocial moratorium: period where were not adults but not kids (verge of adult, not quite)
-experiment with themselves
-should actively explore their identity
-unresolved identity crisis = identity confusion
Crisis
period of development where teens explore alternatives (ex. hiphop one month, ballet the next)
Commitment
personal investment in identity (landing on a identity I feel most comfortable in)
James Marcia’s four statuses of identity: Identity diffusion
committing to an identity without exploring others (ex. an artist who ignores that part of themselves & becomes a doctor instead due to parents)

withdrawn, not a deep understanding of themselves, not interested in exploring who they are

In the middle of active exploration (ex. changes interests frequently) do not commit
