what is emotion?
- Positive or. negative feelings generally in reaction to stimuli, accompanied by physiological arousal and related behaviors
- Motives are often accompanied by emotions
- Emotions have motivational properties of their own
what are the 4 keys elements in the defining emotion?

what does the James-Lange Theory entail?
Physiological reactions and behaviors are the cause of our conscious experience of an emotion
o i.e., Because you smile, you are happy. o i.e., Because you cry, you are sad.
what does the Cannon-Bard Theory entail?
- Conscious experience of an emotion and physiological reactions/behaviors are simultaneous, yet independent reactions
- ex= o i.e., Dogà«I fear dogs» + increased heart rate + running
what does the cognitive theory entail?
o Cognitive interpretation of external events and of bodily events is key to our emotions

=disturbance of mood in which the individual experiences a euphoria without cause characterized by unrealistic optimism and heightened sensory pleasures. • High euphoria • High self-esteem • Little sleep is needed • Unrealistic optimisim
