Body Cavities
Spaces that enclose internal organs
Cranial Cavity
Cranial cavity bones that form a hollow space of the head
Vertebral Canal
The bones of the vertebral column (backbone) ; contains spinal cord
Meninges
3 layers of protective fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Shock-absorbing fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord
Thoracic Cavity or chest cavity
Formed by the ribs, the muscles of the chest, the sternum(breastbone), and the thoracic portion of the vertebral column ; major trunk cavity
Pericardial cavity
A fluid-filled space that surrounds the heart
Pleural cavity
Two fluid-filled spaces around the heart : one around each lung
Mediastinum
Central part of the thoracic cavity (heart, esophagus, trachea, thymus, and blood vessels)
Diaphragm
Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
Extends from the diaphragm to the groin and is encircled by the abdominal muscular wall and the bones and muscles of the pelvic
Abdominal cavity
Superior portion ; stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and most of the large intestine
Pelvic cavity
Inferior portion ; urinary bladder ; portions of the large intestine ; most of the internal organs of the genital systems
