Foundation of EMT
The modern EMS (Emergency Medical Services) system has been developed to provide what?
Prehospital or Out-of-Hospital care.
What is the purpose of EMS?
To get trained personnel to the patient as quickly as possible

provide emergency care on scene, en route to hospital, and until hospital care is assumed by the hospital staff

Steps and Components of the EMS System
- Patient- Makes initial call
- Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD) - receives call and dispatches emergency respondents
- EMR, EMT, and or Advanced EMT’s and Paramedics - respond to the scene
- The patient is received and is given laboratory tests, diagnosis, and further treatment
- The patient is transported to the Emergency room or special care center
- The patient is then presumed by members of the Medical staff
There are 4 levels of EMS Training
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) This is designated for the “First Responders” such as Police Officers, Fire fighters and other health professionals in this capability
- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) Considered the minimum level of certification for ambulance personnel
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Basic level care with some advanced level care such as airway devices, monitor of blood glucose, ect
- Paramedics - Provides the most advanced level of prehospital care
