CH(S) 29+31 Head/Spine/Abdominal/Genitourinary Injuries Flashcards
Anterograde amnesia
Inability to remember events after an injury.
Axial Loading Injuries
A spinal injury caused by a force applied straight along the spine’s axis.
Basilar Skull Fracture
A fracture at the base of the skull
Battle sign
Bruising behind the ear: may be indication of skull fracture
Central Neurogenic Hyperventilation
Deep: rapid breathing
Cerebral Edema
Swelling of the brain
Closed head Injury
Head injury with no broken skin
Coup-contrecoup Injury
Brain Injury on opposite side of impact.
Epidural Hematoma
Accumulation of blood between skull and dura mater
ICP Intracranial pressure
Pressure within the cranial vault
Intracerebral Hematoma
Bleeding within the brain tissue: also known as intraparenchymal hematoma.
Linear SKull Fracture
A simple crack in the skull without displacement.
Meinges
3 protective layers covering the brain and spinal cord
Primary Injury
Injury to the brain and its associated structures due to direct result of impact to the head
Racoon Eyes
Bruising around the eyes that may indicate skull fracture
Retrograde Amnesia
Inability to remember events leading up to head injury
Secondary Injury
The after effects of primary injury
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Bleeding in the subarachnoid space (where cerebral spinal fluid circulates)
Evisceration
Displacement of organs outside the body
Flank
Region below the rib cage and above the hip
Guarding
Muscle contractions of abdominal wall to minimize pain of abdominal movement: sign of peritonitis.
Hematura
Blood in urine
