CH 32 Orthopedic Injuries Flashcards
Acromioclavicular joint (AC joint)
shoulder joint where the acromion (a bony prominence on the scapula) meets the clavicle (collarbone) at the top of the shoulder
Articular cartilage
White layer of cartilage covering the articular surfaces of bones in synovial joints.
Calcaneus
The heel bone
Closed fracture
Any break in a bone: overlying skin is not broken
Compartment syndrome
Swelling in a confined space that produces dangerous pressure: may cut off blood flow or damage tissue
Crepitus
Bone or joints rubbing together
Ecchymosis
Bruising or discoloration due to bleeding under the skin
False Motion
Movement that occurs in a bone at a point where there is no joint, indicating a fracture
Fascia
Fiber like connective tissue that covers arteries, veins, tendons and ligaments
Fibula
The outer and smaller bone of the two bones in the lower leg.
Glenoid fossa
the socket in the scapula (shoulder blade) where the humerus (upper arm bone) fits to form the shoulder joint
Hematuria
Blood in the urine
Ligaments
Bands of fibrous tissue that connects bone to bone
Nondisplaced fracture
Crack in the bone that has not caused the bone to move from its normal anatomic position
Pelvic Binder
Device to splint the bony pelvis: to reduce hemorrhage from bone ends, venous disruption and pain.
Retroperitoneal space
The space between the abdominal cavity and the posterior abdominal wall
Sciatic Nerve
Nerve in the lower extremity: controls most leg and foot sensations
Swathe
A bandage that passes around the chest to secure an injured arm to the chest
Tibia
The shinbone
