CH 30 Chest Injuries Flashcards
Cardiac Tamponade (pericardial tamponade)
Compression of the heart due to buildup of blood or other fluid in the pericardial sac.
Commotio Cordis
Chest injury caused by blow to the chest
Crepitus
bones/joints grinding together
Flail Chest
A life-threatening chest injury where two or more ribs are broken in two or more places, causing a free-floating segment.
Flutter valve
A one-way valve that allows air to leave the chest cavity and not return
Hemopneumothorax
Accumulation of blood and air in the pleural space of the chest
Hemothorax
Collection of blood in the pleural cavity
Myocardial Contusion
Bruising of the heart
Occlusive Dressing
An airtight dressing used to protect wounds from air and bacteria.
Pericardium
Sac surrounding the heart
Open pneumothorax
A chest injury where air enters the pleural space through an open wound, preventing proper lung expansion.
Paradoxical motion
Abnormal chest movement, often due to flail chest, where a section of the chest wall moves opposite to the rest of the chest.
Pneumothorax
Accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity
Pulmonary Contusion
Injury or bruising of lung tissue that results in hemorrhage.
Tachypnea
Rapid breathing
Tension Pneumothorax
A life-threatening condition where air gets trapped in the pleural space, causing pressure on the lungs and heart.
Traumatic Asphyxia
A pattern of injuries seen after a severe force is applied to chest
Vented chest seal
Occlusive dressing designed to allow air to escape through the dressing but not be drawn back in
