Airway 2 Flashcards
Agonal Gasps
Abnormal breathing sounds characterized by slow, gasping breaths, sometimes seen in patients with cardiac arrest.
Alveolar Minute Volume
The volume of air moved through the lings in 1 minute minus the dead space.
Anaerobic metabolism
The metabolism that takes place in the absence of oxygen.
Apnea
Temporary cessation or pause in breathing
ATV
Automatic Transport Ventilator. A device that provides controlled or assisted breathing for patients during transport.
Bilateral
A body part of condition that appears ob both sides of the midline.
Capnometry
The measurement of carbon dioxide levels in exhaled breath to assess how well a person is breathing.
Capnography
Method to measure the patients ventilatory status, circulation and metabolism.
CPAP
Continuous positive airway pressure. A ventilator that provides continuous airway support to patients with severe respiratory distress.
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath
Gastric Distention
Air buildup in the stomach causing bloating.
Glottis
The space between the vocal cords that is the narrowest portion of the adult’s airway.
Hemothorax
A collection of blood in the (lung) pleural cavity.
Hypercarbia
Increased carbon dioxide levels in the bloodstream.
Hypoxia
Not enough oxygen in tissues.
Parietal Pleura
Thin membrane that lines the chest cavity.
Pneumothorax
Accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity.
Stridor
high-pitched, whistling sound caused by airway obstruction.
Visceral Pleura
Thin membrane that covers the lungs.
Ataxic Respirations
Breathing patterns that have a unidentifiable rhythm.
