Ch. 9 Flashcards
characteristics of water
liquidity, high heat capacity, expands as cools, capillarity, universal solvent, fluvial process, ecosystem services
hydrologic cycle
the movement of water from one storage area to another
runoff
water draining off the land and back into the sea in streams
salinity
measure of the concentration of dissolved salts which are mostly sodium chloride bur also include salts containing magnesium, sulfur, calcium, and potassium
lake
body of water surrounded by land. lake baykal in siberia is largest. two factors needed to form lakes: 1. some sort of natural basin having a restricted outlet. 2. sufficient inflow of water to keep basin partially full. glacial movement can have created basins.
swamp v. marsh
flattish areas submerged in water that are shallow most of the time and allow growth of agriculture. swamp: trees, marsh: grasses and rushes. coastal plains, broad river valleys or recently glaciated areas.
river v. stream
stream generally smaller than river. provide the means by which the hand surface drains and by which water sediment and dissolved chemicals are moved ever seaward. mississippi is n americas largest river by far. amazon then congo longest world.
ephemeral
dry most of the time
groundwater
underground water.
