Ch. 8 Flashcards
8 climate controls
(1) general circulation patterns (2) air masses (3) latitude (4) ocean currents (5) proximity to oceans (6) topography (7) continentality
koppen climate classification system
by far the most widely used. based on average annual and average monthly values of temp and precipitation.
tropical humid climates (A)
almost all of the land area within the tropics. only true winterless climates on earth, lots of moisture
climograph
12 columns of months, with temp scale on the left, precipitation on the right. average monthly temps are connected by a curved line in the upper portion, average monthly precip is a bar graph on the bottom.
dry climate (B)
30 percent of the land area of the world. largest expanse in the subtropical latitudes. hot temp that receives rain but evaporates so quickly, so considered dry. desert and steppe.
mild mid latitudes ©
equatorward margin of the midlatitudes, extending farther poleward along the west coast of continents than along the east. long hot summers, short mild winters,
severe midlatitude (D)
only in the northern hemisphere. continentality is key. long cold winter, short summer that varies from warm to hot. and transitions periods in spring and fall. most rain in summer, winter is not dry and snow can last for months
polar and highland climates (E) (F)
furthest from equator. little insolation so little warming. enduring cold. coldest summers and lowest temps in the world. dry.
