CH 9 Flashcards
What is the sarcolemma?
The plasma membrane of the muscle fiber. (Surrounds the muscle cell)
Where is the endomysium?
Around muscle cell
What type of tissue are the sarcolemma, endomysium, perimysium, epimysium
Connective tissue
What is the perimysium?
Denser C.T. surrounding fasciculus
What is a fasciculus?
A group of muscle fibers
What is the epimysium?
C.T. that surrounds the muscle (many fasciculi make up muscle)
Which muscle cells are spindle-shaped?
Smooth muscle
Which muscle cells are cylindrical and branched?
Cardiac muscle
Which muscles are very long and cylindrical?
Skeletal muscle
Muscles are named according to what?
Location, size, shape, orientation, origin and insertion, number of heads, function.
Muscular system functions
Body movement, maintenance of posture, respiration, production of body heat, communication, constriction of organs and vessels, and heartbeat.
Properties of muscles
Contractility, extensibility, excitability, and elasticity.
Excitability
Respond to a stimulus
Contractility
Muscle shorten with force
Extensibility
Muscle can be stretched beyond its normal resting length and still contract
