What is a conjugation?
A group of verbs that share a similar pattern for their endings
What does the second conjugation verb end in?
ē (for example: videō)
What does the first conjugation verb end in?
ā
In the first conjugation the ā stem vowel is swallowed by the first person personal ending ō (for example the stem for amō is amā, but the ā is swallowed by the ō), what happens in the second conjugation?
the e is not swallowed by the personal endings (for example: videō)
What is the third principle part
perfect
The third principle part is the stem for what three tenses?
perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect
How do you find the stem for the third principle part?
drop the ī from the word (for example the third principle part for videō is vidī, so the stem for the third principle part is vid-)
What kind of action does the perfect portray?
past action that has been completed
What kind of action does the imperfect portray?
past action that was ongoing or incomplete
How do you form the perfect tense?
Add the perfect tense personal endings to the third principal part (not the first principle part like the present, imperfect, and future does)
What are the perfect tense stem endings?
ī imus
istī istis
it ērunt
What are the three ways to translate the perfect? (Use videō as an example of translation)
I watched
I have watched
I did watch
