Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
secreted by the pituitary gland to stimulate maturation of the egg cell (ovum)
Gamete
male or female sexual reproductive cell sperm or ovum
Genitalia
reproductive organs
Gestation
time period from fertilization of the ovum to birth; pregnancy
Gonad
female or male reproductive organ that produce sex cells and hormones
Graafian follicle
a fluid-filled structure in the mammalian ovary within which an ovum develops before ovulation
Gynecology
study of the female reproductive organs, including the breast
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)
hormone produced by the placenta to sustain pregnancy by stimulating the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone
Hymen
mucous membrane partially or completely covering the opening to the vagina
Labia
lips of the vagina
Lactiferous ducts
tubes that carry milk from the mammary glad to the nipple
Luteinizing hormone
secreted by the pituitary gland to promote ovulation
Mammary papilla
Nipple of the breast
Menarche
first menstruation
Menopause
gradual ending of menstruation

Neonatology
Study of newborns
Obstetrics
branch of medicine and surgery concerned with pregnancy and childbirth
Orifice
an opening
Ovary
one of a pair of female organs on each side of the pelvis
Ovulation
release of the egg from the ovary
Ovum
mature egg cell
Parturition
act of giving birth
Perineum
Space between vaginal opening and anus
Pituitary gland
endocrine gland at base of brain
Placenta
vascular organ attached to the uterine wall dring pregnancy
Pregnancy
gestation
Progesterone
hormone produced by the corpus luteum in the ovary and the placenta of pregnant women
Puberty
period of adolescent development at which secondary sex characteristics appear and gametes are produced
Uterus
hollow pear shaped muscular female organ
Vagina
muscular mucosa-lined canal extending from the uterus to the exterior of the body
Vulva
external female genitalia
Abruptio placentae
placenta partly or completely separates from the inner wall of the uterus before delivery
Carcinoma of the breast
malignant tumor of the breast
Carcinoma of the cervix
malignant tumor of the cervix
Carcinoma of the endometrium
malignant tumor of the uterus
Cervicitis
Inflammation of the cervix
Choriocarcinoma
A malignant, fast-growing tumor that develops from trophoblastic cells
Down syndrome
a congenital condition
Ectopic pregnancy
Out of place pregnancy (usually in Fallopian tube)
Endometriosis
a condition in which cells similar to the lining of the uterus, or endometrium, grow outside the uterus
Erythroblastosis fetalis
type of anemia in which the red blood cells (erythrocytes) of a fetus are destroyed in a maternal immune reaction resulting from a blood group incompatibility between the fetus and its mother.
Fibrocystic disease
lead to the development of fluid-filled round or oval sacs (cysts) and more prominent scar-like (fibrous) tissue, which can make breasts feel tender, lumpy or ropy
Fibroids
muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus (womb)
Hyaline membrane disease
condition that causes babies to need extra oxygen and help breathing
Hydrocephalus
an abnormal buildup of fluid in the ventricles (cavities) deep within the brain.
Ovarian carcinoma
Cancerous tumor of the ovary
Pelvic inflammatory disease
is an infection of one or more of the upper reproductive organs,
Placenta previa
a problem during pregnancy when the placenta completely or partially covers the opening of the uterus (cervix)
Preeclampsia
high blood pressure (hypertension) disorder that can occur during pregnancy.
Pyloric stenosis
an uncommon condition in infants that blocks food from entering the small intestine
Abortion
he use of medicine to end an undesired pregnancy
Amniocentesis
a test you may be offered during pregnancy to check if your baby has a genetic or chromosomal condition, such as Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome or Patau’s syndrome.
Aspiration
when something enters your airway or lungs
Cauterization
a medical technique performed by a doctor or surgeon
Cesarean section
the surgical delivery of a baby through a cut (incision) made in the mother’s abdomen and uterus
Chronic villus sampling
a prenatal test that involves taking a sample of tissue from the placenta to test for chromosomal abnormalities and certain other genetic problems.
Colposcopy
Visual examination of the uterus
Conization
A procedure in which a cone-shaped piece of abnormal tissue is removed from the cervix.
Cryosurgery
A procedure in which an extremely cold liquid or an instrument called a cryoprobe is used to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue

the action or condition of becoming or being made wider, larger, or more open
Curettage
the use of a curette, especially on the lining of the uterus.

complete surgical removal of a body organ, especially the eyeball and other contents of the eye socket, usually in cases of malignant cancer.
Fetal monitoring
is a procedure in which instruments are used to continuously record the heartbeat of the fetus
Hysterosalpingography
an X-ray test to outline the internal shape of the uterus and show whether the fallopian tubes are blocked
Laparoscopy
a surgical procedure in which a fiber-optic instrument is inserted through the abdominal wall to view the organs in the abdomen or to permit a surgical procedure.
Mammography
specialized medical imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside the breasts.
