Ch. 7 Vocab Flashcards
Refers to an individual who has difficulty with the sound system of a language and utilizing the rules that govern the combination and order of phonemes in words
Phonological disorder
Refers to a person who only has a problem producing a few phonemes, or whose speech errors are tied to the motoric aspects of speech production
Articulation disorder
Simplicity of adult speech i.e. children’s speech
Phonological process
Phonological Processes
Syllable Structure Process: Reduces a syllable to a consonant-vowel (CV) pattern to open syllable
Ex: “bake” -> “ba”; “mouse”-> “mou”
Final consonant deletion
Phonological Process
Syllable Structure Process: Deletion of a consonant from a consonant cluster
Ex: “Snow” -> “no”; “play” -> “pay”
Cluster reduction
Phonological Process
Syllable Structure Process: Omission of an unstressed (weak) syllable either preceding or following a stressed syllable
Ex: “telephone” -> “tephone”; “probably” -> “probly”
Weak syllable deletion
Phonological Process
Substitution Process:
Substitution of a stop for a fricative or affricate
Ex: “sake” -> “take”; “zoo” -> “doo”
Stopping
Phonological Process
Substitution Process: Substitute velar and palatal consonants with an alveolar place of articulation
Ex: “cat” -> “tat”; “mash” -> “mat”
Fronting
Phonological Process
Substitution Process: Substitutes a fricative for an affricate
Ex: “chip” -> “ship”; “ledge” -> “lez”
Deaffrication
Phonological Process
Substitution Process: substitution of the glides /w/ and /j/ for the liquids /l/ and /r/
Ex: red -> “wed”; like -> “yike”
Gliding
Phonological Process
Substitution Process: Substitution of a vowel for postvocalic or syllabic /l/ or /r/ including some vowels
Vocalization
Phonological Process
Alteration in production due to phonetic environment
Assimilation process
Phonological Process
Assimilation Process: Voicing of a normally unvoiced consonant
Ex: pig -> big; cup -> gup
Prevocalic voicing
Phonological Process
Assimilation Process: syllable final voiced phonemes that either precede a pause or silence between words, or occurs at end of an utterance
Ex: bad -> bat; hose -> hoss
Postvocalic devoicing
Stop consonants
/p, b/ /t, d/ /k, g/ (glottal stop ?)
