A word is pronounced carefully as a single item (word by word)

Process whereby phonemes take on the phonetic characters of neighboring sounds
Ex: “moo” - lips are puckered (rounded) for the production of ‘m’ bc they are getting ready for net sound ‘oo’
Assimilation
Occurs when the identity of a phoneme is modified due to a phoneme following it (R to L)
Regressive assimilation
A phonemes identity changes as a result of a phoneme preceding it in time (L to R)
Progressive assimilation
Omission of a phoneme during speech production (elimination if a sound)
Ex: “Camera” ‘er’ is left out and pronounced “camra”
Elision
Addition of a phoneme to the production of a word
Ex: “Leo” /j/ is added /lijoū/
Epenthesis
Transposition of a sound in a word
Ex: “elephant” to “efelant”
Metathesis
Overlapping of the articulators during speech production
Ex: “Soon” lips are rounded at beginning ‘s’ in anticipation of the rounded vowel ‘oo’
Coarticulation
Full form of a vowel becomes more like the mid-central vowel when spoken in connected speech
Ex: “I can go”
