Ch. 3 Anatomy & Physiology Of Speech Flashcards
6 Systems of Speech
Respiratory, phonatory, resonatory, articulatory, nervous system, auditory system
Why is speech an overlaid function?
The primary function of the body structures is to sustain life. Speech is a secondary function.
Systems of speech:
Provides the “energy source” for speech (lungs)
Respiratory
Systems of speech:
Provides the voicing (larynx)
Phonatory
Systems of speech:
Acoustic source provided by voicing is modified within the pharyngeal, oral, and nasal cavities.
Resonatory
Systems of speech:
Acoustic source provided by voicing are modified by oral motor structures (mobile and immobile articulators)
Articulatory
Systems of speech:
Controls musculature, receives and makes sense of input information (CNS and PNS)
Nervous system
Systems of speech:
Processes speech and non speech acoustic signals received and perceived by listener.
Auditory system
Systems of speech broken down 3 ways:
Respiratory, laryngeal (at the level of the larynx), supralaryngeal (above the level of the larynx)
What are the primary structures of the respiratory system?
Lungs, rib cage, abdomen, and associated muscles
Egressive
Sounds are produced with the flow of air that moved outward from the lungs (exhalation)
Some other languages have sounds produced by the flow of air moving inward (inhalation)
Ingressive
Major muscle that separates the abdominal and thoracic cavity
Diaphragm
What is abduction?
When vocal folds are apart
What is adduction?
When vocal folds are together
