Ch 7 Victim Management Flashcards
Triage evaluation method for checking respiratory, circulatory, and neurological function, with the intention of categorizing patients in one of the four care categories: minor, delayed, immediate, and expectant
simple triage and rapid treatment (Start)
Method used to identify accident casualties as to extent of injury
triage tagging
decreased blood volume
hypovolemia
result of traumatic injury where the patient’s muscle tissue becomes swollen and tightly encased. At four to six hours, the crushed tissue begins to die and release toxins
compartment syndrome
potentially fatal condition that occurs as a result of crushing pressure on a part of the body for four to six hours; the injured tissue begins to die and release toxins
crush syndrome
device used to deliver a high concentration of oxygen through the mouth and nose to injured patients
nonrebreather mask
condition in which fluid escapes into the body tissues and causes local or generalized swelling
edema
abnormally low or decreased body temp.
hypothermia
any disturbance in the normal rhythm of a heart
arrhythmia
autonomous physiologic reaction to immersion in cold water, in which the blood and oxygen supply is shunted to the brain to maintain core functions.
Mammalian diving reflix (MDR)
rapid breathing that reduces the level of carbon dioxide in the blood, which can have physiologic consequences, including syncope
hyperventilation
incident in which a trapped victim must be removed from any kind of entrapment
extrication
A victim packaging device used in extrication. the board is slightly longer and wider than an average person to accomodate immobilization straps and cervical immobilization devices
long spine board (LSB)
board used to package a patient with suspected spinal injury; may be used with a harness for lifting the patient
miller board
wire or plastic basket-type litter suitable for transporting patients from locations where a standard litter would not be easily secured
stokes basket
