Ambilineal Descent
Parents have the choice of affiliating their children with either kinship group
Ambilocal Residence
The married couple has a choice of living with either the relatives of the wife or the relatives of the husband
Arranged Marriage
A marriage in which the selection of the spouse is outside the control of the bride and groom
Avunculocal Residence
The married couple lives with or near the husband’s mother’s brother
Bilateral Descent
A person is related equally to both the mother’s and father’s sides of the family
Bride service
Work or service performed for the brides family by the groom for a specified period of time either before or after the marriage
Bridewealth
The compensation given upon marriage by the family of the groom to the family of the bride
Consanguineal relatives
Those people to whom we are related through birth or blood
Cross cousins
The children of siblings of the opposite sex
Descent
A person’s kinship connections traced back through a number of generations
Divorce
The formal dissolution of a marriage
Dowry
Goods or money transferred from the bride’s family to the groom or to the groom’s family
Endogamy
Marrying within a certain group
Exogamy
Marrying outside of a certain group
Extended Family
Two or more nuclear families that are linked by blood ties
Fictive kinship
Relationships that are determined by neither blood nor marriage
Incest taboo
The prohibition on mating with certain categories of relatives
Kinship system
Those relationships found in all societies that are based on blood or marriage
Levirate
The custom whereby a widow is expected to marry the brother (or some close male relative) of her dead husband
Matriarchy
The women in a society have more authority and decision-making prerogatives than the men
Matrilineal descent
A form of descent in which people trace their primary kin connections through their mothers
Matrilocal residence
The married couple lives with or near the relatives of the wife
Monogamy
The marriage of one man to one woman at a time
Multilineal descent
Ancestry traced through both females and males and includes ambilineal descent and bilateral descent
Neolocal residence
The married couple establishes an independent place of residence away from the relatives of either spouse
Nuclear family
A two-generation family formed around the marital union and the children
Parallel cousins
The children of siblings of the same sex
Patrilineal descent
A form of descent in which people trace their primary kin relationships through their fathers
Patrilocal residence

Polyandry
The marriage of a woman to two or more men at the same time
Polygyny
The marriage of a man to two or more women at the same time
Preferential cousin marriage
A marriage between either parallel or cross cousins

Taking a number of different spouses one after another rather than at the same time

The practice of a widower marrying the sister (or some close femLe relative) of his deceased wife
Unilineal descent
Whereby people trace their ancestry through either the mother’s line or the father’s line, but not both
