Ch. 7 - Group and Team Dynamics Flashcards
Define “Group”
Collection of 2 or more mutually interacting individuals
Define “Team” and what it must consist of.
- personal or task interdependence
- sense of shared purposes/objectives
- collective identity
- specified roles (ex: position in sport)
- structured modes of communication
- norms
What are the stages of Group Development?
Forming Storming Norming Performing Adjourning
Define each stage of group development.
Forming - beginning of the season & seeing how a team operates
Storming-where conflicts occur, but this is normal in sports (ex: who will start? Captain?”
Norming - the tensions and conflicts resolve here
Performing - instead of focusing inward, focus outward to competition
Adjourning - End of season and having decreased contact with teammates or coaches (ex: some transfer, graduate, etc.)
Can you fall back in stages during group development?
Yes.
In what stages is it most common for there to be fallback in Group Development?
most commonly with storming and norming
What are 2 important things to have for Group Structure?
Roles and Norms
Describe Group Roles.
behaviors required or expected of a person occupying a certain position
What are the 2 types of group roles?
- Formal Roles (ex: coach, captain, etc.)
- Informal Roles: forcer or intimitador (ex: comedian of group, distractor, etc.)
Describe Group Norms.
a level of performance, pattern or behavior or belief (ex: expectations or patterns like showing up early or not drinking)
What are some factors that influence Team Climate?
Social Support Proximity Distinctiveness Fairness Similarity
Describe Social Support in developing an effective team climate.
Being able to create a social support to facilitate team cohesion.
Describe Proximity in developing an effective team climate.
Proximity is how easy it is to have cohesion, so closer proximity would make a greater climate. (Ex: bonding with teammates on a road trip or in the locker room)
Describe Distinctiveness in developing an effective team climate.
the greater the group feels distinctiveness, the better the climate (ex: group motto’s, traditions, slogans, uniforms)
Describe Fairness in developing an effective team climate.
being evaluated evenly and objectively with everyone can bring a group closer together
Describe Similarity in developing an effective team climate.
greater the similarity, then greater the climate (ex: similar attitudes, commitments, aspirations, etc.)
What is the Basic Principle for individual and team performance?
the individual abilities of team members are often not good predictors of how a team will perform
Define Steiner’s Model.
- Shows that actual productivity is potential productivity - losses attributable to faulty group processes
- Also shows that loses result from motivation and coordination (timing, movement patterns)
Describe the Ringelmann Effect.
This the phenomenon by which individual performance decreases as the number of people in the group increases.
Describe Social Loafing.
An individual within a group/team putting far less than 100% effort in due to motivation losses
How can you reduce or eliminate social loafing?
- Increase Identifiability (ex: videotape to make sure they are doing their responsibilities for their role)
- Determine specific situations where social loafing occurs (like example above)
