Ch. 7: Conformity Flashcards
social Influence
The way people are affected by real and imagined pressures of others
- Constructive, Neutral, Destructive
- Conforming, Complying, Obeying
Chameleon effect
mimicking motor behaviours subconsciously
- babies mimic simple gestures as early as 6-12 months old
Two possible reasons for non-conscious imitation
Social Function - we tend to like those who mimic us
Self Esteem Function - people tend to mimic and like being mimicked in concord with how much they like the other person
Conformity
The tendency for people to change perceptions, opinions, and behaviour in ways that are consistent with social or group norms
- people find it difficult to not conform to norms
* Asking another to give up their subway seat for them
Why don’t people generally see themselves as conformists (2 reasons)
- people judge others by overt behaviour and themselves through introspection
- people often rationalize their behaviour to see themselves as independent
