Ch 7 Flashcards
(Scientist involved in discovery of cell theory)
Schwann
Zoologist: all animals contain cells
Cell theory (3 parts)
- All living things are made up of cells
- Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
- New cells are produced from existing cells
(Scientist involved in discovery of cell theory)
Schleiden
Botanist: all plants contain cells
(Scientist involved in discovery of cell theory)
Virchow
Physician : cells come from other cells
Prokaryotes
(Before the nucleus)
They are unicellular bacteria with no nucleus
(However can still preform all characteristics of life just as eukaryotes)
Eukaryotes
They are typically larger, multi/unicellular, they have a nucleus
Cell wall
Plant cells!
Provides protection/ support
Cell membrane
All cells! (Even bacteria)
Lipid bylayer
(2 layers of lipid) with proteins (channel/carries ) and carbs[id tags]
•Has a semipermeable barrier- some stuff moves in/out , other things cannot
•Non polar things pass freely, polar and ionic cannot directly cross
Passive transport
NO ENERGY REQUIRED
high-low (slide)
Active transport
ENERGY IS REQUIRED
low-high
Diffusion
Facilitated
Movement of anything from high to low
F- diffusion with helpers (proteins)
Osmosis
Diffusion of water with the help of aquaporins.
Water moves from low solute ( high free water) to high solute ( low free water)
Isotonic
Hypertonic
Hypotonic
Isotonic=same strength (happy animal)
Hypertonic= greater strength; water going out
Hypotonic= lower strength; water in (happy plant)
- Endocytosis
- Phagocytosis
- Pinocytosis
- Exocytosis
- In
- Eating
- drinking
- out
