Ch 6- Tissues Flashcards
Tissue
A group of similar cells that perform a common function.
Pleurisy
Inflammation of the serous membranes in the thoracic cavity around the lungs.
Peritonitis
Inflammation of the serous membranes of the perineum (abdomen).
Neoplasm
Tumor, mass of abnormally dividing cells.
Metastasis
Cancer cells spread through blood and lymph
to new areas.
Epithelial tissue
Cover and protect body surfaces
Line body cavities
Form glands
Move substances in/out of blood
Connective tissue
Support/connect body parts
Transport (blood)
Immune system (bone marrow/wbc’s)
Muscle tissue
Movement.
Both internally and externally.
Nervous tissue
Communication and coordination of body functions.
Allergies and asthma
Mast cells produce chemicals that cause inflammation. Mast cells release histamines. Leukotrienes (asthma) cause the muscle contraction in the airway making it hard to breath.
Tissue repair. Which tissues are best at repair?
Epithelial and most connective tissues
Tissue repair. Which tissues are the worst at repair?
Neurons and muscle cells.
Cutaneous membranes
The skin is made up of an outer layer of epithelial tissue and an inner layer of connective tissue.
Serous membranes
Line cavities and cover organs inside the body. Secrete water fluid for lubrication.
Mucous membranes
Line body surfaces exposed to the outer environment. They produce mucus for protection and lubrication.
