ch. 6: muscle palp (back and arms) Flashcards
Origin of trapezius
MED 1/3 of the SUP nuchal line, inion (EOP), ligamentum nuchae and SP of C7-T12
Insertion of the trapezius
LAT third of the clav., acromion process, and the spine of the scapula
innervation of the trapezius
Accessory nerve (cranial XI), and cervical nerve C3 & C4
actions for superior fibers of the trapezius
elevation of scap, SUP rotation of scap., extension of head and neck, (UL) contralateral ROT’N of head and neck, LAT flexion to the same side
action for the middle fibers of the trapezius
retracts scap.
actions of inferior fibers of trap
depresses scap, SUP rotates scap
position of patient when palpating upper trap
seated
position of clt when palpating middle trap
prone
position of clt when palpating lower trap
prone
upper trap: what do you palpate and what action do you resist
palpate: MED third of SUP nuchal line, EOP, and ligamentum nuchae to C7
Resist: ipsilateral LAT flexion and contralateral rot’n of C-spine
middle trap: what do you palpate and action you resist
palpate: C7-T5 SPs
Resist: clts arm abducted to 90 degrees, thumb pointed up, resist scap. retraction
lower trap: what do you palpate and action you resist
palpate: T6-T12 SPs
Resist: clts arm abducted to 150 degrees, resist scap depression, “superman” position
origin of Lat
SP of T7-S5 via thoracolumbar fascia, POST iliac crest, ribs 10-12, and INF angle of scap
Insertion of Lat
floor of bicipital groove of humerus and MED lip of intertubercular sulcus
nerves of Lat
thoracodorsal, C6, C7, C8
actions of Lat
extends, adducts and MED rotates the humerus and assists with forced inspiration
Levator scapulae origin
POST tubercles of TVP’s C1-C4
insertion of Levator scapulae
MED border of scap thats SUP to the spine of scap
(including SUP angle)
innervation of Levator scapulae
C5–>dorsal scapular n, cervical (C3 and C4)
actions of Levator scapulae
elevates scap, rotates scap inferiorly, extension and LAT flexion of C/SP+ (if shoulder is fixed)
origin of Rhomboideus Minor
SP of C7-T1
insertion of Rhomboideus Minor
MED border of scap including the root and above
innervation of Rhomboideus Minor
C5–>dorsal scapular n
actions of Rhomboideus Minor
retracts, elevates and rotates scap inferiorly
origins of Rhomboideus Major
SP of T2-T5
insertion of Rhomboideus Major
vertebral border of scap below scap spine
innervation of Rhomboideus Major
C5–> dorsal scapular n
action of Rhomboideus Major
retracts, elevates and rotates scap inferiorly
which muscles connect the upper limb to the vertebral column
trapezius, latissimus dorsi, levator scapulae, rhomboideus minor AND major
which muscles connect the scap to humerus
deltoid and teres major
origin of deltoid
lateral 1/3 of clavicle, acromion process and spine of the scap (INF border)
insertion of deltoid
deltoid tuberosity of humerus
innervation of deltoid
axillary nerve (C5, 6)
actions of delts
Middle: abducts humerus at GH jt. (all bellies)
Anterior: flexion and MED rotation of humerus at GH jt.
Posterior: extension and laterally rotates humerus at GH jt.
origin of Teres Major
lower 1/3 of LAT border of scap and across INF angle to MED border (excluding tip)
insertion of Teres Major
MED lip of intertubercular sulcus of humerus (crest of the lesser tubercle of humerus)
innervation of Teres Major
lower subscapular nerve (C5, 6)
