Ch. 6: Measurement Flashcards
Concept
A general idea about something
Concept Measurement
The process through which concepts are precisely defied so that they can be used meaningfully in research
Content Validity
A type of validity to determine the comprehensiveness of a given indicator for the concept that is being measured
Face Validity
A type of validity to determine whether a chosen indicator has something to do with the concept that is being measured
Index
A composite measure that serves as an indicator for a concept that combines scores from a number of individual items, such as responses from several survey questions
Indicators
Precise visible phenomena that can be directly measured
Intercoder Reliability
Often used as a test to determine the degree of reliability for an indicator, this assess the degree to which different coders arrive at the same result using the same indicator
Operationalization
The process of identifying the indicators for concepts
Reliability
A property to assess whether repeated use of an indicator provides consistent results
Split-Half method (for reliability)
Used often in survey research, this is a means to assess the reliability of an indicator whereby a researcher identifies similar indicators for a concept and then determines the degree to which the result from the different indicators are consistent
Test Retest Method (For Reliability)
Used often in survey research, this is a means to assess the reliability of an indicator, whereby the same respondents are asked the same question at different points in time to determine whether the responses remain consistent
Validity
A property to evaluate how well a particular indicator matches the concept it is intended to measure
