Ch 6: Coastal Processes Flashcards
Coastal Erosion: Hydraulic Action
The force of the waves crashing against the coast erodes the coastline
Coastal Erosion: Compressed air
The compression and expansion of air weakens the rock
Coastal Erosion: Corrosive action
The sand and rock erode the coast further
Bays and Headlands
The soft rocks are eroded much faster (bay) the harder rocks take longer time (headlands) e.g. Dublin Bay
Cliff example
Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare
Blowhole
When the roof of a cave is eroded away
Arches
formed when 2 caves meet
Stack
formed when the arch collapses
Stump
When a stack is eroded to sea level
Swash
When waves hit the coast and the water runs up the beach
Backwash
When the water runs back down the beach
Long shore drift
When waves approach the coast at an angle
Groynes
Force the sea to deposit its material
Beach
Formed when waves deposit material along a gently sloping coast
Spit
When deposited material builds up in the bay
