Igneous
Metamorphic

What are igneous rocks?
Formed when magma cools and hardens at or beneath the surface
Granite
Igneous rocks that cooled under the surface. Used in buildings like the GPO. Found in Co.Wicklow
Basalt
Igneous rock that cooled on the surface. Used in road chippings. Found in Giants Causeway Co.Antrim
What are sedimentary rocks?
Formed from the remains of other rocks, plant life or animal life
Limestone
Sedimentary rock that has remains of compressed sea creatures. Used to make cement. Found in the Burren, Co.Clare
Sandstone
Sedimentary rock that is made from grains of sand. Used as paving stone. Found in Magillicuddy Reeks
What are metamorphic rocks?
Once igneous or sedimentary but changed due to heat or pressure
Marble
Metamorphic rock formed from limestone. Used for fireplaces. Found in Connemara, Co.Galway
Quartzite
Metamorphic rock formed from sandstone. Used in road building. Found in Croagh Patrick, Co.Mayo
Rocks as resources examples
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas
What is a natural resource?
Something not man made but needed by people
What is drilling?
Used to extract oil or gas from an underground reservoir
What is open-cast mining?
Cheap method of mining
What is shaft mining?
Used where the resource lies deep beneath the surface
